A huge bank of ragged purple clouds moves in across the sky while foamy waves lap at the shore. There is a damp density to all representations of land in this painting: the pebbles, the logs, the cliffs and the distant mountains, all appear saturated. The elements are truly alive in this painting. The theme of purple lends itself also to the logs in the foreground – a striking contrast to the rusty tones of cedar.
